KUALA LUMPUR - A number of celebrities , including the founder of the Virgin Group , Richard Branson , pledged to boycott a hotel chain that has to do with the Sultan of Brunei Hassanal Bolkiah , the Sultan after applying the controversial Islamic sharia law in the country .
Sultan Bolkiah announced Wednesday that he would encourage the adoption of sharia law that will eventually include severe penalties such as stoning .
Branson said at the weekend that the Virgin employees will not stay at a luxury hotel chain the Dorchester Collection , which includes The Dorchester in London , England , and the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles , USA . " No employee @ Virgin , as well as our families , who will stay at the Dorchester Hotel Sultan adhere to human rights , " the British billionaire said in a Twitter posting late on .
A number of other people who have called for a boycott include comedian Stephen Fry , TV host Sharon Osbourne and comedian Ellen DeGeneres .
Groups from the U.S. , Feminist Majority Foundation also said it has attracted its annual awards , the Global Women's Rights Awards, chaired by Jay Leno and Mavis , of Beverly Hills as a form of protest .
Dorchester Collection reportedly owned by the Brunei Investment Agency , an investment entity that is under the finance department of the oil-rich sultanate .
The Brunei Government officials could not be immediately reached for comment related to it on Monday. Dorchester Collection also did not immediately respond to permintaanAFP to comment on the news .
Step Brunei has sparked criticism in social media against the rich ruler , and international condemnation , including from UN human rights office . However , Sultan Bolkiah has defended the application of the law , which is intended to support Islam and keep the country from outside influences . " We never think badly about others . We never rely on them to accept us or agree with it , but it is enough if they respect us as we respect them , " he said at the end of last week , when announcing the implementation of the law .
In the early stages , sharia law imposed fines or imprisonment for violations , including indecent behavior , neglect to attend Friday prayers , and pregnant . The second phase , which include the penalties for theft and robbery , will be implemented by the end of this year . The penalty will be harder, like cutting off limbs and whip . By the end of next year , penalties such as stoning for adultery and sodomy will be applied
